Linn-Mar FBLA
Chapter Article

FBLA or the Future Business Leaders of America is learning oriented club that could help many high school students that are pursuing a career in business or looking to improve their presentation and public speaking skills. Joining FBLA can help further improve the skills required for future college or career opportunities. Students that join FBLA will participate in community service, leadership, and academic activities.
Linn-Mar FBLA has meetings every first and third Friday morning before school. During these meetings, chapter leaders often bring in speakers such as who came in to talk about techniques to become a better public speaker. Our first business speaker this year was Jessica Andersen, a Service Trainer for the University of Iowa. Jessica Andersen used students to demonstrate her point and brought in the whole audience to notice what was the correct way to speak and what was not. Another important business speaker was Carrie Mielle from Riverside Casino, who works with animations to make ads for the Casino. She presented a presentation of what she does in her career in order to inform the chapter members about a great career option. Our most recent public speaker was Twilla Gross, a freshman in college who placed top-10 in Baltimore in June for public speaking. Twilla provided insight into how the National Leadership Conference operates and why she would recommend more student attend it.
Outside of the meetings, the Linn-Mar FBLA chapter does a lot of fundraising to help pay for students who want to go to the FBLA conferences such as UFLC, SLC, and NLC. On most Fridays and Saturdays, the Linn-Mar FBLA members run the stands at Kinnick Stadium during Hawkeyes Football games. Through this fundraising venture, Linn-Mar FBLA hopes to help pay for student conference fees. This will make conferences available to more students who may have difficulty paying the registration fees.
While student enrichment is a big part of Linn-Mar FBLA, they also give back to the community. One of the biggest events Linn-Mar FBLA has helped out in the last couple of years is the Big Brother and Big Sisters event. When the Big Brothers and Big Sister organization runs their banquet in October, chapter members run the food stands in order to keep the young kids and adults fed. As the year goes on more community service projects will be taken up.
One of Linn-Mar FBLA’s biggest benefits is the friends one can make. Owing to the multiple chapter bonding events, FBLA is a place many people can make new friends. Our first bonding event close to the starting of the year was the FBLA drive-in movie night. Many people came out in their cars to watch Black Panther. There was cotton candy and popcorn. The most recent bonding activity Linn-Mar FBLA has done is the Silly Supper. The Silly Supper is an event where all the officers cook a meal and the members who eat it have to pick their meal items based on riddles. This bonding activity was very amusing and got all of our members thinking.
FBLA is definitely a club meant for all that want to achieve more. For anyone thinking about joining FBLA, talk to Mrs. Schult or Mrs.Lampe to join or look out for the fliers around the school.
